Knit socks: With these instructions you're sure to succeed

Who doesn't love them? The cosy and warm knitted socks that are not only particularly cosy in winter. Knitting your own socks is not only easy, but also a lot of fun. You can choose your favourite colours and pattern. With these instructions, we explain how knitting socks is child's play, even for beginners.

What you need to knit socks

Socks have to withstand a lot of wear and tear. That's why the right wool and care are essential. Special sock wool, which is available in different colours or as a gradient yarn, is particularly suitable. It is also important to always choose a yarn with the same thickness and care properties. We will be happy to explain how to wash and care for wool.

You will also need:

  • Five identical needles
  • Scissors
  • Sewing needle
The best way to knit colourful socks is with a colourful gradient yarn.

Knit socks: First the cuff

  1. Start at the cuff with a cast-on using two needles on top of each other and as many knit stitches as required for the respective size. The two needles will make the cuff a little looser and your socks will be more comfortable to wear.
  2. Then pull one needle out again so that all the stitches are only on one needle.
  3. Now start with the double pointed needles: take three more needles, divide the cast-on stitches by four and distribute them evenly over the other needles so that all four needles are in a square in front of you and have the same number of stitches.
  4. Use the fifth needle to knit the sock from one side to the beginning of the heel.
  5. Once one side has been knitted, use the free needle for the other side until all four sides have been completed. Whether you want to knit a pair of short socks or long cosy socks is purely a matter of taste.

Now it gets more complicated: the heel when knitting socks

The heel is only knitted over the first and fourth needle, which you cast off on one needle at the beginning. To do this, knit all stitches until one needle is free. The third and second needles and their stitches rest during this time. Now knit the rows back and forth from right to left until you have reached the length and width of the heel. Once you have finished knitting the heel of the sock, bring all five needles back into play. To do this, pick up the respective stitches from the third and second needle at the edge of the completed shaft until all four needles have the same number of stitches.

And finally, the foot: you have knitted your first socks under instruction

The foot and the ribbon tip are part of the finishing work. First work the foot in the appropriate length and then start with the ribbon tip. To do this, knit the first and third needles to the end and cover the second and fourth needles with raised stitches. Finally, pull together tightly with a double thread, cut off the rest and pull through the last stitches with a sewing needle.

You can vary the size as you wish and also knit socks for the little ones in different patterns. Embroidered with cute decorative buttons or little bobbles - there are no limits to your imagination.
