How to clean your ski jacket – instructions

Do you love getting on the ski slopes in the winter? Despite white powder snow and many years of skiing experience: one or two small falls are part of every ski season. And despite the freezing temperatures, you'll quickly work up a sweat with so much physical activity. After your last descent, you should clean your ski jacket - find out here what you need to pay attention to.

Cleaning your ski jacket - how often should you do it?

Ski jackets and other ski clothing are functional clothing that must meet special requirements. Ski clothing must keep you warm for hours in cold weather, and should also be breathable and, above all, water-repellent. Therefore, the following basic rules apply when cleaning your ski jacket and other ski or functional clothing:

  • Avoid unnecessary washing.
  • Always wash your functional clothing separately: zippers or Velcro fasteners could cause damage to normal textiles. You should also close these before washing.
  • Only use products that are specifically designed for sportswear - such as the liquid detergent Dylon Liquid Sport Detergent. This way you can ensure that the sensitive membranes and thus the function are preserved.

Cleaning your ski jacket: washing machine or not?

You can find out whether you can clean your ski jacket in the machine from the washing instructions on the sewn-in care label. It is also advisable not to fully load the washing drum. For example, if you only wash the ski jacket and pants set, make sure to remove all stains. If you find stains or discoloration, you can pre-treat them accordingly, for example by applying a little detergent to the dirty areas and letting it take effect for a short time.

Dry the ski jacket properly

Dryer yes or no? For down, definitely yes - otherwise you can also find this information on the care label. Hanging the jacket on a clothes hanger to dry is also a good alternative - but putting it on the heater is less so. In any case, let the ski jacket dry thoroughly before putting it in the closet or clothes box. Otherwise it can quickly become musty.

After cleaning the ski jacket: Prevent new stains

Have you only ever known waterproofing products for shoes? This can also be useful for ski clothing. These products can achieve two things: On the one hand, they strengthen the effect of the functional fibers, for example supporting the water-repellent properties of your jacket. On the other hand, waterproofing spray also makes clothing less susceptible to dirt. It's best to waterproof your ski jacket immediately after washing and drying - this way you'll have less effort when cleaning your ski jacket after the next winter.
