Hanging up laundry correctly seems pretty simple at first. And yet there are a few tips and tricks to help clothes dry a little faster or to avoid unpleasant smells. In summer this usually works itself out, but what about in the winter months? We help bridge some gaps in knowledge.
In general, you should always hang laundry in such a way that as much air as possible can circulate around the item of clothing. Therefore, always ensure that the room is optimally ventilated. After you have taken the clothes out of the washing machine, it is important to first shake them out briefly and vigorously and only then hang them up on the clothesline. You should definitely untangle knots and tangles in the textiles to prevent unpleasant smells. Socks in particular tend to form knots at the ends. Denim fabrics also often get caught in each other. Here it is important to untie the bags. Then hang the laundry up on the waistband. In addition, make sure that the zipper and buttons on your jeans are open so that air can circulate optimally.
Environmentally friendly and super fast at the same time: Use the power of the sun and hang your laundry out on the balcony, terrace or in the garden in summer. Direct sunlight is the most effective and allows clothes to dry within a short time. White laundry, towels and delicate items in particular are dried in no time. However, caution is advised with dark colors. Direct sunlight can cause the material to fade. It is therefore best to let dark clothing air dry outside in the shade without direct sunlight.
By the way: You can also hang your laundry outside in winter. Frosty temperatures actually make your clothes much softer. If you don't have the luxury of having a balcony, garden or terrace, you should pay particular attention to adequate ventilation in the cold season - even when the heating is running.
No iron at hand? In some situations the shirt needs to be wrinkle-free - for example at a job interview or a business meeting. To prevent wrinkles from forming, you can take pipe insulation and put it over the cords of your clothesline. Then you use your clothes horse as usual. The result is guaranteed to be wrinkle-free! Alternatively, you can use clothes hangers and hang them on the drying rack as well.
Do you have little space and don't want to use it for your wet clothes? To hang the laundry properly, you can use a space-saving drying rack, such as a wing dryer. This is built vertically and provides space in height so that you can store wet clothes in a space-saving manner. There are also special attachments for the bathtub or structures for attaching laundry to the ceiling of the apartment using a pulley.
Particular caution applies to knitwear: it should be left to dry lying flat. Knitwear is very heavy when wet and can lose its shape or bulge when hanging. Socks should always be hung at the top. If you want to hang your laundry properly outside, you should use clips. This means you can hold your clothes loosely on the line and nothing will blow away. Some also swear by hanging jeans by the ends of their trousers and shirts by the collar, for example. You decide for yourself which option is best for you.
